Day 28 – Something that you miss

I do miss my family and friends who have passed on.

Besides that I do not feel I have miss much at all. I had a full life and got to do almost everything I wanted to do.

Haven't visited Australia yet but it is on the list.

Day 25 – A first

How the heck can anyone respond to that. every time I did or do something for the first time I consider that a "first". If they want me to pick out my first "first" I would not know what that was since I was a new born at that time.

Oh, just thought of a first that made my Mother very proud at the time . I was the first in our extended family to graduate from college. She had gone back to work, at Wanamaker's cutting metal plates to be used as identification cards when shopping at the store. There were no credit cards at that time. As a result she was able to provide funds for my tuition, which I always say was about four thousand for the four years. Not sure of that but it was really cheap by today's standaards.

Day 26 – Your fears

Death, fire, drowning, falling, automobile accidents are the things I fear the most.

I believe as one ages the fears are fewer.

Day 24 – Something that makes you cry

Growing up as a child and during my teenage and young adult years I was always able to keep the tears from flowing.

The first time I really cried was on my wedding day. Tears of joy, I suspect. What did I know at that time.

Somehow, years after that,  after that I began to get tears in my eyes at births, on seeing the newborns, funerals, weddings, sad stories on TV or in the movies or even in the newspapers or on the Internet and personal events of that nature. This has continued.

I have even cried when I saw our flag fly at various times and places.

I have even cried at some sunsets.

I never had a prolong spell of crying but I do tear up and it no longer makes me feel ashamed or embarrassed.

My most recent tears came when I recently watched this video.

Not sure why but I did.

I am now a old softie.

Day 23 – Something that makes you feel better

First on my list is when I only have to get once during the night to go to the bathroom. I wake up in the morning and think I feel better for the uninterrupted sleep.

If my back is not in pain when I awake that is a plus also.

I feel better when my grandchildren say please and thank you and when the entire family says yes instead of yeah. A pet peeve of mine and should have been in yesterdays, "Things that upset me." I guess they have been doing better with that lately.

Wedding, christening, holidays, birthday parties always give me lift.

Got add a beautiful sun rises or sunset and a nice sunny, not too warm day.

A hug and a kiss from any of the grand kids also goes a long way.

Took two Advil's this evening and they certainly help with the pains I  had in my leg  and back from my fall in the bathroom this afternoon

Realized as I write this that I have lots of things that make me feel better and that I am a lucky guy.

Day 22 – Something that upsets you

Not much except my golf game. When I hit a duck hook it upsets and frustrates me. Only once or twice a round and I know not why. Wish I had a solution for this.

I get upset when I get stuck in traffic due to road repairs where only a single lane is getting by.

I get upset daily when I read the newspaper.. Seems to me we have never been in more troubled times. I see more that crimes and killings are escalating. Also a lack of interest and input my parents with their children As an old timer it makes me think fondly of the old days.

Not much else upsets me I have learned to go with the flow and ignore things that are out of my control.

Day 21 – Another moment

Please refer to Day - 8 since I do not have another moment to discuss at this time.
This is a repeat. i guess they were running out of ideas for days.

Day 20 - This Month

So far so good. The month is not over yet. Got the house cleaning done. Weather has improved. A little cooler. Need rain. Got a little last night and a promise of more over the weekend. Noticed my Azealea bush in the front of the house, six foot in diameter, is dying off, not sure why. I would hate to lose it. Days are getting shorter. Got a few rounds of golf in. Did a lot of reading and fooling around with a six year old computer trying to get it upgraded to Windows 7 and reinstalling programs. Been talking to Pakistan or India a lot.

Looking forward to the trees changing color.

Well I got to day 20 and still hanging in there. This has turned out to be more of a chore than I need.
Have good night and a great Saturday.

Dat 19 - Something You Regret

Gotta take a bye on this one. I have many things I regret but will not discuss or post them on a public blog or  message board. No way, sorry.

Day 18 - Favorite.Birthday

Without a doubt it will be my next one. I cannot believe I will be eighty years of age. No one on my Mother;s or Father's family ever lived that long.

Maybe now I will be able to  shoot my age on the golf course. Dreaming again.

Day 17 – Your favorite memory

The birth of my children and grand children.

With that memory I think of the great responsibility that parents have when raising their children.

I have many memories of trips that I have taken and places I have visited and the times I have enjoyed with family and friends.
Many others memories come to mind but it is difficult to just select one of them as my favorite. So I will stick with the children memories.

Day 16 – Your first kiss

In another earlier post I mentioned Liz Mullen who was my f
irst love.
She also was the first non-family female that I ever kissed.
Short and sweet, like this post, but that was the way it was and is.

Day 15 – Your dreams

When I sleep I often dream of a perfect golf round on the course that I play on the most. I really make some very good shots in that dream and enjoy the game better than my live game.

Actually as I get into bed, to relax and fall asleep, I start on the first hole of the course and see in my head or mind the best shot I ever had on that hole from tee to green and into the hole. I continue doing that hole by hole until I fall asleep. I do not think it has ever taken me more than six holes before I drop off . It works for me. Prior to this method I use to think  of and see waves rolling up on a beautiful beach.

I do have a recurring theme in my disturbing dreams of being in a strange place and lost, with lot of people around and rushing to somewhere or someplace and never being able to get there. It generally ends when I find my long time friend and we have a good laugh about my anxiety.

Generally wakes me up and I have to use the golf/sleep routine to get back to sleep. I do not have that dream very often.

If this is supposed to me about what I dream (day dream) will happen in the future I will list only one.  I would like to see, and live to enjoy, my grand children grow up to be responsible, successful, loving and caring adults as their parents have done.  If I could survive long enough I would like to see them graduate from college and get married and give me some great grand children.

Well I can dream can't I?

Day 14 – What you wore today

Going to cheat on this one since it seems to be a repeat of day - 10, which had the same Title. I have copied that post here and will cut and add as needed
Today I wore blue pants and a long sleeve blue shirt that I thought match very nicely. My wife agreed. My shoes are crepe sole with a soft material top, also black and very comfortable. Clean underwear, boxer shorts. Haven't worn a tee shirt for forty years. Will go  to bed in my summer shorty pajama, since the temp will be in the sixties.

That was easy, just changed black to blue and altered the temperature  forecast. I deserve a break since I have been so diligent, so far, with this meme.

Day 13 – This week

Well now that is an interesting topic.
Do they mean this past week or the up coming week. I would rather forecast a nice week with three rounds of golf and no "Honey Do's" but I guess I have to try to fill you in on the past week.

It was a bummer. Wife had me on the "Honey Do" list. It is Fall Cleaning time and spent four days, four hours each day, on my assigned tasks. That includes washing and cleaning the blinds and windows inside and out, we only have thirteen windows, wiping down all wood work and doors. Dusting the walls and ceiling, cleaning the two and a half bathrooms. Dusting and polishing furniture. also had to strip my computer desk top and bottom, dust and align the cords and power supplies and knickknacks that I have accumulated over the years. Dusting, arranging, and packing up some of the thirty five books on or in my bookcase. I read thirty five books since the last cleanup. Lot of knickknacks there also along with my golf ball collection, that rack that holds the ball is difficult to get dust free.

Spent quite a few hours working on my sons six year old computer. Formatted the hard drive and loaded Win 7. Tried to get on line to update Windows and IE and load the programs they want for the kids, a six year old boy and a four old girl. Can't get online with my DSL and am now working with Verizon and Hewlett Packard  for service help. it is difficult on the phone what with the "outsourced" assistance they both use.

Went to church on Sunday and did not golf all week. Baby sat one day with other grand children. Today we had a visit from my nephew and wife from Detroit that we have not seen in ten years. It was fun catching up with them.

Probably a few more things that I forgot but I am as bored as you probably are if you have read this to this point.

Now wasn't that an exciting week? Probably not, but I enjoyed it and I am still exhausted. Hope you all had a better one.

Day 11 – Your siblings

I believe I mentioned my siblings in my introduction.
I had two sisters, older and a younger brother. My sisters are deceased, the oldest one died ten years ago. They were nice people and we all got along reasonably well and had a nice family relationship. They all married and between them had nine children. My nieces and nephews are scattered all of the states and a lot of my contact with them is on Face Book.
Even a couple of them are also deceased. As I sit here now and think about it, for the first time ever, I am the oldest person surviving in my extended family. Guess that tells me something but I can only think of the saying, "Only the good die young."

Day 12 – What’s in your bag

Well, now I get it. At last! I should have read all of this list of the days before I started to do them. I see now it is for women. What with the "what I wore yesterday" and now this one. See I am not stupid or gullible, it just takes me more time than most to catch on.

If I was to tell you my first thought about what is in my bag I would probably be banned from Google for life.

Thankfully for you and me I just remembered my Golf Bag. It has contains fourteen clubs, a dozen or so balls, tees, a retriever for swooping balls out of the water, paper and cloth towels, bug spray, two water bottles, ball markers, club head covers (one is an Eagle head), band aids, rubber bands. key chain with house and car keys, a few tags that hang on the bag from some of the classier golf courses that I have played.

There are probably a few things I left out of this list but I know I have no room for anything else in my bag. It now weighs more than I can comfortably lift. Thank goodness I have a cart to put ti on so I do not have to carry it.

Wondering what tomorrow will bring? Have a nice day, we are having a one here. .

Monday, September 13, 2010

Day 09 – Your beliefs

My first thought, when I see the word belief, is my religion. I strive to be the best person I can be, pray, go to church, give alms, helps others, be patient, forgiving and caring.

I believe in God, and  country. a hereafter, basic goodness of most people, love, trust, truth, honesty, our system of government, civil rights, the four freedoms and a lot more that I have forgotten in believe in.

I am strong in my beliefs and will defend them to the best of my ability.

Day 8 - A Moment

A moment to me is a short period of time, like in "Wait a moment." I think of a moment as being a second.

I have no idea what is expected of me in response of this title. Since it has an "A" in the title they may be looking for a special moment.
No one moment in my life can stand out as the most outstanding and wonderful. There are too many that I treasure.

If they are looking for a special moment. I have hundreds of them, maybe a thousand.
Birth of my children and grand children. Christmas', holidays, trips, vacations, graduations, sunrises, sunsets, marriage, flowers, animals (small), good golf shots, kisses, hugs, babies, good sermons, good sport games on TV, traveling, praying, etc.
I could  go on for ever but I am boring even me.

On reading that list I see only good moments. If I have bad moments I do not dwell on them.

I treasure my life and try to enjoy every moment that comes my way and am thankful that I am able to experience them.

Day 07 – Your best friend

I have often said, that I only have two friends. One has died and I have not seen the other in five years.
Friend to me is a special relationship and even I know and like a lot of people there have been few that I have given that title to especially the best friend title.
Marty was my grammar and high school friend. Ed was my college friend, Bob was my Army friend. Then I married and for a period of at least twenty year my wife Kate was my friend.
Then I decided to again seek new friends and Frank, Neil, Ed joined my life.
Time went on and then I met Dan and from day one I considered him a friend and after seventeen years we are still friends. We have had at least a monthly lunch since we met and often more than that. He is my
golfing buddy when I can get him out to play. I really enjoy being with him and we have even taken cruises together, since his wife and mine do not feel up to traveling. I hope Dan and I will remain friends since when I am with him I am not the oldest person in the room. He is two years older than me. He also likes the same cocktail as I do.
Not sure at my age that I would seek out another "friend".

Well that finishes a week of posts wonder what tomorrow will bring.
I do not think I ever did a daily post for a week since we all got to blogger.

Day 6 - Your Day

Being retired for sixteen years I have a very routine day which usually begins at 3 or 4 AM when I have to go to the bathroom With my prostate problem some nights I get up as much as five times. I have lived with it for ten years and had  biopsy then which proved negative. I read that very few die from it so i have chosen to ignore it

I wake up and get out of bed. when I feel rested, somewhere between 6:15 and 9:30 AM.
Wash, dress, shave if needed and have my coffee, take the dog out and pick up the paper. Spend the first hour doing the cryptogram, cross word puzzle, jumble, the other one where you form word using the letters in a given word, I think that is called Scramble,  and finally the Sudoku. It is rare when i cannot complete the crypto, maybe three times  a year, and the jumble 90 % cross word 95%, Scramble 95%. The Sudoku. I have not mastered, even though I spent my career as an  accountant.
Get my bagel and coffee and finish the paper while watching  Regis and Kelly and Rachael Rae on TV. Got to make sure Rae puts her garlic in every dish.
Retreat to the bed room, make my bed, and turn on the computer. Read email first and respond if I feel it is necessary. Then pick up another daily cryptogram to do and a cross word puzzle. Next comes the message boards that I faithfully read and comment on and then the eighty or so blogs that I read and sometimes even comment on. Then check face book and twitter. I spend at least 2 hours, or more, a day with this routine. I then may play an hour or two of Slingo to which I am addicted.
Then I pick up my Kindle Ebook and read for another two hours or so.Evening news and then dinner. I eat whatever the dear wife puts on the table and never complain.
Then it is back to the computer to explore and follow up on everything. At 9 PM, I get my beer and peanut butter crackers.
Another hour of playing Slingo and then to bed to read until I drop off to sleep usually an hour or so.
Sleep good, most of the night, on my left side and do not move all night unless I get the bathroom call.
This is normal routine only deviation is when I play golf at 7 AM or when we visit or baby sit the grand children. Sundays I do go to church and weekends do vary somewhat.
I do have my "Honey Do" list which sometimes interferes.

When I retired I realized that every night is like a Friday and every day is a Saturday and I decided to go with the flow and enjoy. I hope you all will get to try it and I think you will like it.

Day 05 – Your definition of love

This day stumps me. I will think about this afternoon and try to come up with a "definition". I think that word is my problem. So I will attempt to give some examples of love that I have seen or experienced
The hug and a kiss that I get from my grand children is my most recent experience of love. The youngest started it, Sunday, when we were leaving her house and to my surprise the other three joined in. I love them and it nice to see they can express their love without any bribes or threats.
I see my neighbor who is the sole caretaker of his ailing wife and when I see him I see love.
Puppy love or pet love is another type of love I enjoy seeing even though I am not into animals much anymore.
I have a very dear friend Dan who I have told him I love him and he responded in kind. We are more than friends and do and will do anything for each other and I think that expresses our love.
I see parents who obviously love their children and have no problem expessing it.
Love is giving, sharing, trusting, caring and a lot more like that.
Well I guess that is my definition of love, which I think covers my examples.
I like the expression "Love one and another"

Day 4 - What you ate today.

This will be an easy one. For the last ten years or so I do not have much of an appetite.
Every morning starts the same with a cup of coffee with cream and sugar, six packets or three heaping spoonfuls. Hour or so later another coffee and a bagel, either onion, raisin to sesame seed, slathereed with Philadelphia Cream cheese. Generally skip lunch but once in a while I will have a heaping bowl of Rice Krispies with lots of sugar on top.
Today for dinner we had a salad and baby spare ribs, one of my favorites. I ate about ten of them. Sides of cole slaw and potato salad, left over from our Labor Day picnic, which we celebrated yesterday. Dessert was hot apple pie ala mode and of course coffee.
Forgot I had a Manhattan, before dinner, a good double as usual. Use to have one every day but now am restricted, by my wife, to Sundays and holidays.
I also munch on pretzels, five or six, before dinner every night.
Normal weekday meals now are quick and fast since "I do not enjoy my wife excellent cooking." to quote her. Yes, she is a very good cook and for years it was a sit down affair for the six of us with grace before meals. As the kids got older and married it was Sunday dinner for all at our house. Now with the grand children we eat at one of  our kids house's on Sunday with Mom generally bringing  the full meal.
She cooks Italian, German, Irish and American No garlic or sauer kraut.
I finish off every without fail with a can of Budweiser beer and five cracker sandwiches with a lump of peanut butter, crunchy which I have  at 9 PM.
Could not sleep without that night cap.
Food is not really high on my list of things I enjoy.
Had a nice weekend and enjoyed the holiday and I hope you did also.

Day 3 - Your Parents

I believe on the Day -1 Introduction I spoke of my parents. Did not realize there was special day for them. They certaibly deserve one as do the majority of parents. Mine were great, down to earth, hardworking, loving people, religious, outgoing, etc. Mother was Irish and Father German and their parents were imigrants from the old country. Both were born in the late 1800's. To say they were old school is a big understatement.

The more I write here the more I remember them and how we four were raised. I know now for certain they did a good job.  They have been dead almost  20 plus years ago I know it is trite to say but I will do so anyhow,  " I think of them every day."
They both died at the age of 72 years and 3 months plus or minus a few days. You can imagine what I did when I reached that age.

In response to people who tell me nice things about my own children,
I have often said, "The most important thing I ever did in my life was to raise my children." I use that also when I think it might be appropriate for younger couples.

Wonder what day 4 will bring. This so far has been easier and to my surprise an enjoyable task that makes me grateful for the life I have lived so far,

Day 2 - My first love

Hard to remember back that far but it was when I was in grammar school, probably 1943, and her name was Elizabeth (Liz) Mullen. A cute Irish lass with a great smile. I was smitten by her.

I asked her to go the Sunday afternoon movie. Admission was ten cents, each, and the package of Good and Plenty, three cents, was shared. I was a big spender, back then. I delivered newspapers at three cents a day and a nickle was a big tip on collection day. Forgot the name of the movie since I only had eyes for her.
Love did not last long, I think her Mother wanted her dates to have a better job.

Can't believe I remembered her name.

Would you believe?

Hi all, would you believe I am actually making a post on my blog?
I know, as you do, I rarely make a post. In fact I have forgotten how to do it and will be luck if it shows up. I do read blogs every day for the over one hundred blogs that I follow, and again rarely comment.
Missie at has come up with an idea or challenge that I think may be fun and I have decided for some reason to attempt to do it. It may help me become a more frequent blogger and I feel I owe it to those whose blogs I read.
Click on the link above and see what you think. She has also posted her Day 1 post.

Hope you all have a nice weekend and Labor Day. God bless those who labor and provide the funds for my Social Security check, Bill

Just in case you were unable to get to Missie blog here is the meme that we will be completing. Will you join us?

Day 1

Yes my name is Bill and I am retired and in my 80 th year.
My parents and most of my friends and family are gone to their reward. Raised by wonderful religious, hard working, principled parents and had two older sister and a younger brother, who is the only survivor. Have a lot of cousins an indirect family.
I have been married for 56 years and had four children oldest two boys were adopted and then the third boy was a natural birth. We then had a daughter when we were 40 years of age. Now have two wonderful daughters-in-laws and a son-in-law who have blessed us with four grand children, who are the joy of my life. They each have one of each kind, boy and a girl.
College grad, worked for over 30 years in various financial positions, in three different hospitals. Retired in 1995 and moved into the fifth home that I have ever lived in. Spent 30 plus years in the house where we raised our children. We had a nice 20 x 40 foot pool which I maintained and enjoyed. Moved to a community on a golf course 10 plus years ago and took up golf at the age of 68.
Had dogs all of my life and the current one is a poodle 15 years old or 105 in dog years. She will be the last I will ever have. Also previously raised tropical fish and really enjoyed that as a hobby. As I write this i am thinking I just may try to find a fish store in the neighborhood..
Well that's my Introduction day 1 post, lets see if I make day 2.
Gees, I thought I lost this when I hit the wrong key. That was one of the reasons I did not post more.
