Update Sunday 11/21/2010

Feeling fine with a good outlook and hardly any pain.

We made it to the Doctor's visit on Tuesday, which actually takes place in what is called a Wound Center, a very nice  modern facility with all the necessary tools and machinery and supplies.
Nurses aide took off the outer bandage and found me a blanket and a pillow. Nurse, RN came in a removed the final bandages and said it looked great. She then told me that my insurance did not approve human skin transplant but rather the pig skin and filled me in with what the Doctor was going to do and what I could expect, He finally came in and apologized for the wait. I did not tell him that I had dozed off. He had the nurse clean in and around the wound and explained that this time the bandage would stay on for a week. That after five weeks of daily changing. Said it looked good and had shrunk from 10 to 7 mm. He applied the pig skin after cutting it to shape and wished me luck and left the room Must have been a busy day for him.
Nurse completed the bandaging and wrap the top layer with an ace bandage that has one sort of adhesive on it so it hold very nice and tight. Was in the office for an hour and by now was starving to death.
Beat it home and had bacon and eggs.

Still looking forward to 1/1/11 and my round of golf. Hope the sun shines.
Let me wish you all a HAPPY THANKSGIVING ! Enjoy the day and company.

We will be celebrating with 9 adults and 4 children and at least two dogs.

Update Sunday 11/14/2010

I left off last week on Monday and I had a visit to the doctor on Tuesday. He was pleased at how the wound was healing and teased me about being cold. He said the reason I was cold  was because I was inactive, guess so since he cut me up so badly, thin which I admit since I weigh the same as I did when I got my driver's license at 16 years of age. I told him he must always be warm since he is over 300 pounds and has a waist, I estimate his at 50 +- inches. Lastly he said I was old. Not much I can do about that.
There seems to something wanting about his bed side manner. As I said before he is a great doctor and I have know him for 25 years and consider him competent and a friend.
He discussed three different skin graphs and I selected door # 2 which is using skin donated and grown from, would you believe, foreskin from infants circumcisions. # 1 was using my skin and I rejected that since it involved another operation and I did not want to press my luck. # 3 was pig skin and the other option was to let it heal on its own, # 1 was one month to heal and the others were a month more each. He will doing this next Tuesday in the Wound Center at the hospital. Based on two months I called the golf course and scheduled a tee time for January 1, 2011. The pro said if I showed up the round would be on him, not often you get to play for nothing so I will be there.

Had a visit from the Home Care nurse on Thursday and Saturday. She said it was looking good also. Measured the length at 7 centimeters which was down from 10 when she first saw it.

Thanks for you comment and wishes, throw in a few prayers for next Tuesday. I believe they work, Bill

Veteran's Day 11/11/2010

As a Veteran, I cannot allow this day to pass without recognition. I was drafted during the Korean war and served my two years proudly and willingly. There was never a thought of not serving by me or my friends. Being raised during WWII we had excellent examples to follow.
My father served in WWI and my brother-in-law saw real action in WWII New Guinea. He enlisted 12/08/1941. He was my boyhood hero.

To all who served I say job well done, I appreciate your service and devotion to our country.
Thank you all.

My Recovery Third Week

I will try to get this up date done over the next day or so.
My purpose in posting this much detail  is that I will be able to refer  my friends, neighbors and on line acquaintances, who are always asking me how I did it and how is my recovery progressing? A little URL link will save me a lot of time. It is will also be a history of the events.

I also want to do this to show how stupid I was in not seeking treatment earlier and what resulted. Maybe I can persuade at least one person to act more quickly and go to the ER if they suffer an injury of this nature.

That is my purpose, not looking for sympathy or pity since I have gotten enough already and appreciated  them but now must move on.

Alert and or warning, this post may contain some nasty looking pictures but i think they show the size, shape and depth of the surgery that was necessary. View at your own risk. .

OK, to get the dates recorded, I fell on 9/20 , went to ER on 10/11 operated on that evening, discharged on 11/14 and went home, 11/19 received a vacuum suction machine which was placed on my leg to drain the blood and fluid from the wound. It was plug in and portable
and only weighs 5 pounds or so, with a six foot cord and drain tube to collect the fluid. I had it on 24 hours a day and it was not really a problem but had to be careful to not trip on the hose or wires on the plug.
Here is a picture of the highly technical, user easy, touch screen, with lots of warnings, alarms, guides, recording and beepers.  It purpose is to suck up the fluid from my wound and increase the rate of healing. I was able to get around with it attached and had no problem sleeping hooked up.
These are two pictures, taken by me, of my wound just after surgery, normal focus then a close up. Ugly isn't it. My first home care nurse said it looked like a work of art. What a morbid sense of humor she has.

Now we have a nice neat, clean bandage, applied by, me unaided, on the day between Home Care nursing visits. The bandage did not show up for me.The last view is out of my bedroom window and shows the view of the golf course that I have when I sit at my desk and look out the window. I often look at and think a about my next round in early March.

Happy Halloween

Still on the mend and each day my wound and I look and feel better.

My wife and I have trouble sharing a room together for more than ten minutes, She thinks I am a baby and want to be pampered.

Jack on his Ship Log blog, again brought memories back for me,

What with news paper masks. We used a balloon for a mold for the face mask. I was often or maybe always a Bum. We also smeared our faces and hands with black soot top it off with my Dad's old hats.

My grand children are going out in beautiful costumes at a cost over over $150. Our outfits cost $.00. I hope they will have as much fun as I did but unfortunately they probably won't. They of course are spoiled rotten by parents who can afford to do it. How times have changed over the last 80 years. Wow !

Here is a song I use to sing before I realized it cut into my candy collecting.

Well that wasn't the one I wanted. I was only one yearwhen that movie came out. We used to go to the movies, only on Saturdays , where admission was only a dime.

Let me try again. Cant' find it but as I recall it went something like this.

Alleluia, I am a bum,
Alleluia, , bum again
Alleluia, give me a handout and I revive you again

One day I went to a house and knocked on the door
A man opened the door and said "Bum, Bum, you been here before.

Repeat chorus

And there were three other verses.

My father had a old record, one sided, of this song, that I think belonged to his father and was played on an old RCA Victrola windup player with the big horn for speakers.

Yes Jack you brought memories and something to do for the last hour. I don't know how you daily poster do it every day. But I do enjoy reading them . Thank you all.

Happy Halloween

My Injury

Well I never thought my wife would tell me that I should go on line and let people know I am still alive. We should all have a family member go on line and let us know when someone dies or whatever their reason for not blogging. I often wonder, as I am sure you do, what happened to some bloggers when they stop posting blogs.

Well my story is that the injury that I posted about a couple of weeks ago finally go to bad that I actually went to the ER to see what they could do. Turns out that I was admitted, operated on and spent three days in patient. It was a lot worse than I expected and I am probably lucky that I will not lose my leg. That's the worse of it but the Docs are telling me I will be fine again in time and the optimist that I am I am sure they are right.

That makes a long story short and my advice that when anybody tell you to go to the ER after any thing happens, GO !!!

Best of everything to my online  friends. I have missed you. I will try to give you weekly update.

My trip

Maybe this would be better titled called "My Slip" since I did not trip but surely did slip.

I mentioned last week in my 30 Days meme that I had an accident on Monday, 9/27/2010.

I decided that I should record for posterity the results of my fall.

I had just finished rehanging the curtains in our master bathroom and was climbing out of the hot tub. The sole of my shoe was wet and when I put my right foot on the tile floor it slipped out from under me. I fell forward to the floor and somehow my left leg, above the knee,  got caught in and twisted under the water spout.

The Hot Tub
The next few pictures, I took on Thursday of last week, show the damage inflicted.  Only a little bleeding which I covered with a couple of small bandaids. The right leg suffered no damage.

 My left leg

It looks a lot worse than I think it is. I walked with a limp for two days, applied ice at first and then used a heating pad for about a week.
The pain was minimal and I did not suffer or lose any sleep. Highly recommend Advil.
The swelling has been going down and the bruises still show but are  fading. The lump was originally the size of a half of a grapefruit and by today is down to half on orange. I will give you another report in a couple of weeks and show more pictures of my skinny legs.

Still no pain, of any significance, today as it has been since the accident. I have looked up local Sports Medicine physician and just may call tomorrow for an appointment.

Here is a picture of the curtain or drape that I was hanging. As you can see it was not a major task.
